"The 'reds' looted the Escorial, sold all the pictures in the prado for Russian gold, cut all the trees in Castellana and the Retiro parks. All this is pure rubbish as I saw with my own two eyes when the struggle was over. In a war, civil or otherwise, the first victim and casuality is truth. The Spanish atrocity stories were every bit as crude and savage as the atrocities that both sides committed."
Fr. Alexander McCabe noted in his journal:
Quoted by Dermot Keogh, An eye witness to history: Fr. Alexander J McCabe and the Spanish Civil War, 1936-1939 in Briefne, 1994, p445-488. Produced by the Cavan Historical Society.
McCabe was a priest to the O'Duffy Brigade.
